DYNAMOMETER, ENGINE RUN-IN,
500 HORSEPOWER CAPACITY
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Military Specification MIL-D-45561(AL) dated 26 May 1987.
Abstract. This description covers a dynamometer designed and constructed to facilitate the testing and run-in of reciprocating-piston, internal combustion engines having outputs up to and climbing 500 brake horsepower (HP).
Salient characteristics.
1. Design of the dynamometer shall be a contractor’s commercial model capable of mounting, testing, and run-in of Department of Defense (DOD) reciprocating piston, spark ignition and compression ignition, internal combustion engines up to and including 500 horsepower and speeds from 400 to 5,000 revolutions per minute (rpm). The engine dynamometer shall be so designed that the engines may be readily installed with only minor adjustment for the particular engine being tested. The dynamometer shall include all the equipment necessary, including engine adapters, for the mounting and proper operation of the following engines: Continental AOSI-895-5, R-6602, LDS427-2 and LDS465-1; Cummins NTC-400, 6CTA, NHC-250 and 8V-300; Detroit Diesel 8V92TA, 8V-71-T, 3-53, 6V-53T and 6.2 liter; GMC302; Mack Endt-673 and IH DT 817G, except for the following, which (if required) shall be furnished by the Government:
Coolant supply, coolant disposal, compressed air supply electric power supply, engine fuel supply, engine air inlet, engine exhaust disposal, engine hoisting equipment, fire extinguishing equipment, instruments for measuring atmospheric conditions, and storage batteries.
