COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION

BALANCER, VEHICLE WHEEL, BUBBLE-TYPE, PORTABLE

The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description (CID) as a replacement for Military Specification MIL-B-45989C (AL).

Abstract. This description covers a portable, bubble-type vehicle wheel balancer to balance wheel and tire assemblies of passenger cars and trucks through 1.25 ton.

Salient characteristics.

1. The balancer shall be equipped with an operator controlled mechanism for engaging and disengaging the contact between the balancing head assembly and its mating pivot point. When wheel and tire assemblies are lifted from the balancing head, contact between the balancing head assembly and the mating pivot point shall automatically disengage through a self activating mechanism without operator influence.

2. The balancer shall require no external energy source.

3. The balancer shall be equipped with a circular spirit level with a sensitivity of no less than 0.1 inch movement of bubble for zero degrees ten minute (10) angular displacement. The bubble balancer indicator shall be recessed in the balancing assembly head to prevent damage to the spirit level.

4. The balancing head assembly shall be equipped with a method or form of dampener to accommodate stabilization from oscillations or movement to completely stabilize within a period of 10 seconds from extreme amplitude or oscillating limits to stable level, using a balanced L 78-15 (9.00 X 15) wheel-tire assembly.

5. The balancer shall be equipped with a centering cone and leveling plate with accurately controlled surfaces. They shall accommodate all American passenger cars and trucks wheel and tire assemblies up to and including 1.25
